EWGA-Los Angeles's
2008Membership and Kick-Off Event
Was a Big Success!
by Susan Watkins, Membership
Chair
I am proud to say we had a very successful, fun event
this year. We had a whopping 24 new members
sign-up! We welcome them to EWGA-LA, and hope to see
them out there on the course, whether beginners or seasoned
golfers. Thanks to our sponsors we had a very
successful raffle drawing and great prizes were given away
to a member who brought a guest that joined and our new
member who joined, Mary Molidor, won a free membership for
the year, congratulations to all who won! Our
guest speaker, AmyAlcott delighted us with stories of how
she entered into the world of golf, I especially enjoyed the
stories of how her parents supported her by putting a net
around the house and building a sand-trap in their yard, it
gave me some ideas for my landscape
design!
AMY ALCOTT
So now, how are we going to top this event? Stay
tuned for next kick-off! Special thanks to the
membership committee - Coral Hawthorne, Roberta Kantola,
Karen White, Nina Guttman, Mercedes Narez, Michelle Haag and
Anna Ott; chaired by Susan Watkins.

WHAT'S
HAPPENING? BARBARA TRIVISON - THE EAGLE HAS
LANDED! Four Chapter members, Cecilia
Worcester, Sandy Markle, Kathy Malmfeldt and Education /9 is
Enough Chair Barbara Trivison, played together at DeBell
Golf Course June 1st. On the Par 4 third hole
(formerly hole # 12), optimum play calls for a controlled
tee shot into a narrow fairway, with lost-ball opportunities
on the right, out-of-bounds and long bunkers on the
left. The approach shot to the green calls for loft
and distance to carry a barranca, without too much length or
the ball will wind up in the street beyond. The green
is guarded on the right by two deep bunkers, and on the left
by trees and a long shallow trap. Barbara hit a
perfect drive, followed by a great pitch shot over the
arroyo (where all of her playing companions landed!), which
banked off the left outside slope of the bunker right of the
pin, and tracked to the hole and in for an eagle! This
was Barbara's first eagle ever, and we were all excited to
watch her get it.
Congratulations! FORMER PRESIDENT PLAYS
GIDGET Our
second L.A. Chapter president, Nancy Katayama, has been
spending some time in Hawaii recently. She decided to
take surfing lessons, something she has always wanted to
do. Hang ten, Nancy! NEW MEMBER

CHAPTER
CHAMPIONSHIP Our 2008 Chapter Championship,
generously sponsored by Bellasport, was held May 17th at Rio
Hondo Golf Course. The course was in good
condition, although Mother Nature turned up the heat to the
high 90's for the day. Occasional cooling breezes made
the temperature more bearable, and a few hardy souls even
walked the course. Although it was a small group -25
competitors and two "for fun", everyone seemed to enjoy the
experience. For those of you not familiar with
this event, there is competition in 5 flights (by handicap
index) as well as official scramble teams. The
competitor with the lowest gross score and the one with the
lowest net score (adjusted by course handicap), in each
flight, qualifies to advance to the Semi-Finals, which for
our Section will be at the Dell Urich Golf Course in Tucson
on July 12th. The low net Scramble team also
qualifies, but we had no Scramble team entries this
year. Lauren Suzuki shot a 79, which was the
low gross round of the day and makes her our Chapter
Champion, in addition to 1st Low Gross in the 1st
Flight. Congratulations to all our players, and best
of luck to our winners as they represent us in Tucson!
Results: Championship Flight, 1st Low
Gross: Denise Drake 1st Flight, 1st Low Gross:
Lauren Suzuki 1st Flight, 1st Low
Net: Nancy Katayama 2nd Flight, 1st Low
Gross: Izabela Sandler 2nd Flight, 1st Low
Net: Edith Apuya 3rd Flight, 1st Low
Gross: Vickie Camper 3rd Flight, 1st Low
Net: Kathy Malmfeldt 4th Flight, 1st Low
Gross: Chris Devine Dailey 4th Flight, 1st
Low Net: Laurie Kaminski The
winner's list is a good mix of new competitors and
some who have won in the past. Denise has been "going
up the ladder" for the past few years, winning in the 3rd,
2nd and 1st flights in past years, including advancing to
the Finals and narrowly losing in a playoff. Judy Wu
will also be going to Tucson; she qualified to go straight
through to the 2008 Finals by virtue of winning her flight
in 2007. Many thanks to Debbie Dakouzlian for
chairing the event, and to Mary Ellen Knowles and Michelle
Haag for helping. Look for Bellasport's
wonderful fashions and accessories, for women and men, later
this year at a special trunk show!

sent out and are due by June 24th. This year we will be

results in
mid-September.

EVENT RECAP 9
is Enough Marriott, May
3rd Eighteen members and one guest enjoyed
great weather, good golf and camaraderie at the Marriott
Golf Course in Manhattan Beach on May 3rd. Leslie
Wallstedt took the prize for low putts, with 15, and Aundria
Rogers and Karen Krull tied for second with 16. Karen
also won the prize for Closest to the Pin on #9, a hat
donated by the Marriott Pro Shop. Leslie also split
the chip-in pool for her feat on #6, tying Sue Prieto, who
chipped in on #4. Aundria also had a chip-in, but took
a lot of ribbing since she declined to enter the pool.
Everyone stayed after for networking, and Karen Krull, our
Handicap Chair, provided an informative session on getting
and maintaining a handicap. Thanks to Barbara Trivison
for hosting another fun event. Lake
Lindero, June 7th It was a warm, breezy day
as eleven members made the trek to Agoura Hills for the June
7th Lake Lindero event. Nina Guttman and Susan Watkins
tied for low putts with 16, and new member Hazel Jackson won
a prize for coming out to play for the first time,
ever! All the players stayed for snacks and
conversation. Thanks again to Barbara for hosting!
18-Hole
Malibu, April 20 On
April 20, a sunny, windy day, 40 members and guests enjoyed
the challenging Malibu course. Geri DeVille was
a big winner, taking the prize for Closest to the Pin on #7,
fewest putts (32), and sharing the chip-in pool with Mary
Ellen Knowles. Socorro Cottle had the Longest Drive,
on #18. 30 players stayed after for socializing and
networking.

Golf, like the measles, should be caught young, for,
if postponed to riper years, the results may be
serious.
